Ohio artist Kathy Kasperovich-Knapp designed a quilted ensemble titled “Soo Smooth It’s Criminal”representing her interpretation of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” music video as a piece of wearable art.
The look includes a vintage 1940’s suit and fedora hat which is reflected in an applique on the back of the jacket. A quilted evening bag was included along with a cuff bracelet as a feminine interpretation of his famous armband. The surface design elements include free motion quilting, hand beading, and a diverse palette of Swarovski crystals. The colors represent the Jackson Five’s Peacock Production Company from the early years.
Knapp created an earlier Michael Jackson ensemble entitled “Just Bead It” shortly after the artists’ death representing a
garment of mourning, whereas the more recent work is intended to be a celebration of his life. The ensembles share a similar peplum design and are intended to complement each other.
In addition to inspiring innovation in the arts, Michael Jacksons’ message is that the show must go on. No matter what happens in life, hold your head high and “follow your dreams wherever they may lead”.
