*Michael Jackson lives on in the hearts of millions, not just for his unmatched talent and artistry but for his optimistic spirit of kindness, warmth and caring ...that is sorely missed today. In a world numbed by senseless acts of violence, hatred and needless suffering, we remember and honor Michael’s optimistic passion in spreading universal messages of peace, unity, healing and love to every part of the earth during the all-too brief time he was with us. The Jackson 5 started with Tito Jackson playing his father's guitar. Tito would wait for his father to leave the house to go to work and he would go and play his father’s guitar and his brothers would sing along and dance as they did household chores. Tito knew that if his father were to find out he would be in trouble but, the passion he had for playing the guitar ran deep and Tito took that chance anyway. Beyond Tito's control a string on the guitar broke and his father Joe found out.
After having to pay the price for his actions Joe decided to have Tito show him what he knew. His brothers Jackie and Jermaine stepped in to support their brother and sang as he played the guitar. When Joe saw the musical talent of the boys, he saw a way to move his family into a new direction. The next day he brought Tito his very own guitar and started working with his sons on music. He taught them dance moves, how to look and how to stand. When the group first started out they were known as the Jackson Brothers, because originally the group consisted of only three older brothers Jackie Jackson, Tito Jackson and Jermaine Jackson. Later on Marlon Jackson would join the group and Michael Jackson as well.
Starting in 1964 to 1990 the Jacksons played a variety of music such as soul, pop, and disco. For six years the Jackson 5 was with Motown Records. They became the biggest pop music group of the 1970s. The Jackson 5 was the first musical group to have four singles reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100, those songs were "I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save", and “I'll Be There". Sometime later the Jacksons would have five more hits reaching number one on the R & B single charts, they included, "Mama's Pearl", "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "Dancing Machine".
Berry Gordy at Motown put together a group called "The Corporation". The idea was to have different individuals working together at the same time to see to the Jackson 5’s success. He had some in charge of wardrobe, others did song writing, and others helped with school work. The Jackson 5 was the first African American teen group to appeal equally to all ethnic groups. It didn't matter the age or the color, the Jackson 5 was well loved and respected.
The Jackson 5 would later leave Motown to go to CBS in 1976 and because of this move the Jackson 5 became better known as The Jacksons. Jermaine Jackson feeling that Motown was where it started and did not want to leave Motown. He decided to stay and began his solo career and younger brother Randy took his place with his brothers. The Jacksons were with Philadelphia International Records for two years. They later signed on to Epic Records. With Epic Records the brothers were allowed more control of their songwriting, production, and image. Their success continued into the 1980s with more hits such as "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)", "Lovely One", and "State of Shock".
The group would then move on to each individual having success in solo careers and it became a launch pad for the greatest entertainer of all time; Michael Jackson. In 1984, the brothers would reunite with the Victory Tour, thanking their parents Joe and Katherine.
In 1989, the Jacksons released a song and album, “2300 Jackson Street”, which included the Jackson 5 members Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Michael, and Marlon along with sisters Rebbie, LaToya and Janet. The song also included the next generation of Jacksons as well. When the music video was made for the song, fans were able to see the Jackson brothers all together with their family and children.
In 1992, the Jackson family, with help from Suzanne de Passe (Berry Gordy’s assist at Motown), produced” The Jacksons: An American Dream”, a five-hour television miniseries based on the history of The Jackson family. In 1999, Michael and his brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2001, the brothers reunited and performed together at two of Michael Jackson’s tribute concerts. In 2008, it was announced that the Jackson 5 sold over 100 million albums worldwide, an achievement only done other by The Beatles.
