Yashi Brown's BioYashi Brown is a poetess and philanthropist also born into the legendary Jackson family. Her book Black Daisy in a White Limousine: 77 Poems, a collection of poems eloquently chronicling life’s triumphs, challenges and views on world issues, was initially announced by Rebbie Jackson, Yashi's mother, on ABC's The View on January 27, 2011.
Realizing the necessity as an emotional release, Yashi began taking her poetry very seriously in her teens then more significantly by her early twenties when she began experiencing the onset of severe emotional challenges. In a recent interview with Hollie McKay of Fox News Yashi states, “The poems date back to when I was in my teens to now. You can see some of the emotional changes and you get a sense of the true honest expression of all the things I’ve experienced with life, with family, love and all of that.” In 77 Poems, Yashi tends to wear her heart on her sleeve with a passionate and simple rhythmic style. All at the same time a youthful no holds bar and mature, highly revealing expression shines through with plenty of introspection and opinionated observation. Yashi, who is a passionate advocate in the mental health community and now successfully living with the more severe Bipolar Disorder Type I, has been interviewed for international, national, and local televised news and web-based radio stations regarding her personal mental health journey and the issue of social and self-imposed stigma greatly associated with severe mental disorders. She sheds light on how poetry was and still is her saving grace. Her advocacy is also part of the healing process and acts as a peer group supporter holding a board position as Treasurer for Project Return Peer Support Network (PRPSN) . PRPSN makes up the largest and oldest peer ran organization for mental health in Los Angeles County with 80 percent of its staff successfully living with a mental disorder that oversee 112 support groups exceeding 2000 people. Its a wonderful example of a successful organization ran by those living with a mental health challenge and now giving back to the community. Yashi is also national spokesperson for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) who’s established itself for three decades as the most formidable grassroots mental health advocacy organization in the country. In addition she has recent projects in the works with the New York based “Breaking the Silence” educational adolescent program also endorsed by NAMI. As a public speaker Yashi has spoken and performed spoken word before patients and faculty in psychiatric facilities and has a speaking roster which includes organizations such as Kidsave, Hands of Comfort Masquerade Gala, The City of Pasadena's Mental Health Day, and the NAMI national convention in Chicago where she is scheduled to perform spoken word from her new book and briefly speak on her mental health journey. She has started a grass roots poetry community called POP which stands for “People of Poetry”. Its mission is to encourage a renewed interest in poetry in popular culture through various channels. One channel is the well known weekly open mic event she’s launched with Tony Award winning Def Poet “Poetri” which is streamed live on the web and gathers every Wednesday night in Hollywood, California and soon to include several more chapters. Another channel is getting face to face with adolescents and young kids by teaming up with the nonprofits such as “Traveling Guitar Foundation”. TGF and has been successful in helping to continue musical arts in public schools and performing arts schools by donating instruments from world renowned vendors and celebrities then also performing live for students and faculty. Spoken word performance is a recent addition to this organization. Currently working on her own documentary which chronicles her personal journey and shares some compelling arguments, Yashi demonstrates how a support system of family, friends, poetry are the keys to her success.
